المفاهيم الأساسية

Primitive subsistence farming
Productivity is low because farmers do not use fertilisers or other modern inputs. It is called jhumming in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland, Pamlou in Manipur, and Dipa in Bastar district of Chhattishgarh.
Rabi season
Rabi crops are sown in winter, from October to December. They are harvested in summer, from April to June.
Millets: coarse grains with high nutritional value
Ragi is a crop of dry regions and grows on several soil types, including red, black, sandy and loamy soils.
Maize Serves as both food and fodder
Maize is used both as food and fodder.
Rubber requires a moist and humid climate
Rubber is a non-food crop and an important industrial raw material.
Jute is the golden fibre
Jute is known as the golden fibre. It grows well on well-drained fertile soils in flood plains, where soils are renewed every year.
Challenges and reforms
Land reform is the main focus of the First Five Year Plan. Inheritance has fragmented holdings, making consolidation necessary.
Farmer-support measures
Other schemes include Kisan Credit Card and Personal Accident Insurance Scheme. Weather bulletins and agricultural programmes on radio and television provide information for farmers.

تركيز الامتحان

Board exam
CBSE assesses this chapter in the 2026-27 year-end board examination.
Syllabus
Agriculture. Learning outcomes: examine the crucial role played by agriculture in our economy and society; analyse the challenges faced by the farming community in India; identifies various aspects of agriculture, including crop production, types of farming etc. Map work: Agriculture - Identify: major areas of Rice and Wheat; largest/major producer states of Sugarcane, Tea, Coffee, Rubber, Cotton and Jute.
Not assessed
These parts go beyond the 2026-27 syllabus and are taught for understanding only: One Farming System Has Many Regional Names, Recognise Farming from Rinjha's Family and Bhoodan and Gramdan: Land and Village Gifts.
Map work
Board map items (identify): major areas of rice and wheat; largest/major producer states of sugarcane, tea, coffee, rubber, cotton and jute.
Map work
The board sets word-only alternatives to map questions for visually impaired candidates (2026-27 sample paper Q9/Q19, e.g. "Where is the Meenambakkam international airport located?"), so stating each place and its location in words is directly exam-useful.
Paper pattern
Social Science 80 marks, 3 hours, 38 questions; Section B Geography 20 marks (17 + 3 map pointing). VSA 2 marks (<=40 words), SA 3 marks (<=60 words), LA 5 marks (<=120 words), case-based 4 marks (3 sub-questions, <=100 words); map question in Geography 3 marks.
Question style
About 50% of board questions are competency-focused.
Practice in the app
124 board-pattern questions with marking schemes: 41 multiple choice (1 mark), 32 very short answer (2 marks), 29 short answer (3 marks), 7 long answer (5 marks) and 15 case-based (4 marks).

  1. Very short answerدرجتان

A farmer needs a crop that can occupy only the short zaid interval. Explain why sugarcane is unsuitable for this plan and name one suitable alternative.

    نقاط التصحيح

    • Sugarcane takes almost a year to grow, so it cannot fit into the short zaid interval.1
    • Names one suitable zaid alternative: watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, vegetables or fodder crops.1
  2. Short answer3 درجات

A farmer believes that light rainfall rules out cotton cultivation in a black-soil area. Explain why this belief is incorrect. Also state cotton's temperature and frost-free-period requirements.

    نقاط التصحيح

    • Cotton requires light rainfall or irrigation; heavy rainfall is not an essential requirement.1
    • High temperature.1
    • 210 frost-free days.1
  3. Long answer5 درجات

A growers' association is considering rubber, sugarcane and banana for new commercial farms. Identify the type of commercial farming for which these are recognised crop examples. Explain any four distinct features that should guide the organisation of farms of this type.

    نقاط التصحيح

    • Identifies plantation farming as the type of commercial farming for which rubber, sugarcane and banana are recognised examples.1
    • Explains one acceptable feature. Acceptable features are: a single crop grown over a large area; use of capital-intensive inputs; employment of migrant labourers; produce supplying raw material to the respective industry; production mainly for markets rather than household sustenance; or transport and communication connecting plantation areas, processing industries and markets. Award 1 mark for each of any four distinct features, with a maximum of 4 feature marks. Count single-crop cultivation over a large area as one feature, and do not award repeated credit for the same idea.1
    • Explains a second distinct feature from the accepted feature list. Industrial raw-material supply, market-oriented purpose and transport/communication links may earn separate credit when each is distinctly explained.1
    • Explains a third distinct feature from the accepted feature list, without repeating an already credited idea.1
    • Explains a fourth distinct feature from the accepted feature list, without repeating an already credited idea.1
